SUBSIDENCE – Identification / Monitoring / Control

SUBSIDENCE! – Is the current dry spell leaving you with a sinking feeling?

This weeks interesting project was to investigate and report on masonry cracking for our clients. The report allowing them to progress with their buildings insurer. The cracking had manifested in the south side gable of the period property, immediately adjacent to hedgerow planting. Such cracking is common when some close proximity tree types are planted too close to foundations that are in clayey soils. Within the hedgerow, a 4m tall Plum Cherry being identified here. Resulting subsidence cracking, can be due to the soil desiccation shrinkage process exacerbated in dry periods.
An example subsidence report can be found at our website

The Importance of Builders Information Packs.

Builders Packs and Sketches to assist our clients and builders. Here at S J Johnson Associates ltd, we always provide a builders information pack along with our Building Control Calculations. The importance of this was highlighted again at several junctures on an interesting project out near Stroud last week. Here our client required the removal of large portions of traditional Cotswold stone rubble infill wall. This can pose the health and safety risk of rubble burst out when forming such openings. To assist we included in the pack a full method statement and the following sketches to assist the builder, recommending Nitofill (TH) by Fosroc to stabilise the infill. The project is also technically challenged by the requirement to temporarily decouple a pattress plate, again covered in the method statement. Providing good engineering design , clear instruction and discharging our CDM responsibilities. Details / sketches from the builders information pack can also be found at our LinkedIn page – via the icon in the web pages header banner or via

New web site fee estimator page

For refurbishment and wall removal projects, a substantial component of fee estimates for undertaking building control compliant design work can be data acquisition where existing plans and records are not available. To assist potential clients in determining the likely cost for their required design work we have added a new page, which clearly outlines the stages of survey, data acquisition and plan production. By cross referencing with the hyperlinks between this new page and the pricing and fees page clients can now build up fee estimates themselves, review them against their budgets and competitors fees before approaching us for formalisation.
